アメリカの音楽家、詩人として知られるパティ・スミス（1946-）の詩集『The Coral Sea』。ポエトリー・リーディングをアーティストの原点に持ち、そのポエトリーとロックを融合させた『ホーセス』にて1975年に鮮烈なデビューを遂げたパティ。デビュー当時は“ニューヨーク・パンクの女王”とも称されますが、音楽からアートまで、彼女の創作は多面的であり、精力的な活動を続けてきました。若き日の彼女のパートナーとして知られるのが写真家のロバート・メイプルソープで、『ホーセス』のジャケット写真も彼の撮影によるものです。ロバートは後に同性愛者となり、70年代初頭にパティとは別れ、1989年にエイズで亡くなります。本書散文詩集は、冒頭に「For Robert」とあるように、ロバートに捧げられた一冊です。パティの詩とともにロバートの写真が添えられているほか、女性写真家のリン・デイヴィスによる氷山の写真が２点、そしてロバートの弟であるEdward Maxeyの写真が巻頭に1点掲載されています。
